What is Universe Selection in Fincanva and how do I use it?

Modified on Thu, 17 Apr at 11:37 AM

Universe Selection is the first — and one of the most essential — steps when creating a screener in Fincanva. It defines which assets your screener will analyze by letting you choose the asset types and refine your selection using specific descriptors. This ensures your filters are only applied to the relevant portion of the market.

Choose Asset Types

You can build your screener on one of the following asset classes:

  • Stocks

  • ETPs (Exchange-Traded Products) – includes ETFs and similar instruments

  • Cryptocurrencies

Refine with Descriptors

Depending on the selected asset type, Fincanva offers additional descriptors to narrow down your universe even further.

For Stocks, you can filter by:

  • Listing Type (Origin) – e.g., USA, Europe, or other regions

  • Exchange – e.g., NYSE, NASDAQ

  • Asset Subtype – focus on common stocks or other classifications

  • Index – include only stocks from specific indices like S&P 500 or NASDAQ 100

  • Sector  – include only stocks from specific sector like Energy or Technology

For ETPs, you can filter by:

  • Listing Type (Origin) – e.g., USA-listed ETPs

  • Currency – such as USD, EUR, or other trading currencies

  • Exchange – e.g., NYSE Arca, LSE

  • Asset Subtype – differentiate between ETF types or structures

For Cryptocurrencies

Cryptos do not require additional descriptors, making the selection process quick and straightforward.
